INTRODUCTION
A laminar flow cabinet, also known as a laminar flow hood or clean bench, is a piece of laboratory equipment that provides a sterile working environment for handling of samples or cultures. The laminar flow operates by passing air through a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter, which removes particles and contaminants from the air. The filtered air is then passed over the work surface in a laminar, or unidirectional, flow to maintain a sterile environment.
Laminar air flow are commonly used in microbiology, cell culture, and molecular biology applications where contamination must be minimized. They are often used for aseptic techniques, such as working with sterile cell cultures or preparing PCR reactions. The design of the laminar flow chamber can vary, with some models being portable and others being large, permanent fixtures. Some models also include UV lights to sterilize the work surface between uses.
